Situated on Dublin’s St James’ Street is original home of one of our most iconic brands. Guinness has been brewed here since its inception in 1759 and the brewery remains one of our most visited, active industries with visitors from all over the world coming to see how the famous stout is made. Right on the very top floor of the building sits The Storehouse, a magnificent industrial space with sweeping views of the city and some stunning, architectural features to be treasured and protected. Among these, the pipes and factory windows offer a glimpse of times past and bond us firmly with the rich history of the building. It is here that the café and restaurant is located and it is only fitting that the history, iconic view and iconic product are all honoured with food and drink to match the status and significance of such a destination.

The job of delivering on this is tasked to executive chef Justin O’Connor whom demonstrated his passion for and knowledge of Irish produce on the seasonally changing menu. On the cold winter’s afternoon that we visited, the menu offered everything a weary traveller, walking in the cold Dublin air would crave! We started with the stunning creamy seafood chowder, packed with smoked and un-smoked fish and served with an open sandwich of Hanlon’s smoked salmon on the delicious house Guinness brown bread. (They certainly didn’t need to go far to fetch the Guinness!)  We also tried the daily changing Storehouse soup, served with a half sandwich of the delicious St Kevin’s Irish Brie, smeared with some of Follain’s apricot chutney…perfect! Afterwards, a steaming bowl of beef and Guinness stew packed a real punch and comforted our chilled bones as did a plate of Loughnane’s Guinness, leek and pork sausages, (made to Justin’s recipe) served atop a steaming mound of champ and caramelised onions… perfect fodder for a rainy day! With this, a delicious bowl of goat’s cheese from Ardsallagh’s excellent stable worked beautifully with some warmed beetroot and fresh watercress and rocket leaves. To finish, a dessert plate with a stunning selection of mini desserts was the perfect accompaniment to our steaming coffees…think fig and blackberry brulée, apple and raisin crumble, Guinness chocolate mousse and date and mascarpone cream and you’ve only heard a part of it! And of course if you haven’t tried it by now, well you just haven’t lived…Guinness and Oysters of course!

This is a charming restaurant in one of the oldest parts of the city with views across the metropolis to rival any other. Justin O’Connor does a fine job of showcasing a national treasure and promoting many more artisans, hopefully some of whom are set to become as iconic as the Guinness brand itself!
