The town of Castlebar has been on the food trail for many years but the opening of a second branch of Rua has established it as one of the very best in the west. The idea behind the second shop and upstairs cafe is very simple - allow customers to eat delicious local food and also to buy to take home. Space in the original café in town didn't allow this concept to develop, so Aran and Colleen McMahon set about locating a second premises and Spencer Street suits them admirably.

Having sourced the best of local ingredients for some 10 years now for the original café, these are now available to buy in the Rua shop and deli on the ground floor. Beautifully laid out, there's a range of freshly baked bread - they bake twice daily - scones and muffins. If you need to eat gluten free products, breads and scones can be ordered. There has been an increased demand for their ""cake away' business with a selection that includes roulades, sticky toffee, lemon drizzle and apple pies, plus a gorgeous 'Cake' cupboard too tempting to ignore. Brownies, lemon butter squares, apple and walnut muffins and other individual cakes are also available. For home cooks, the shelves hold a range of baking essentials and accessories. Find inexpensive and handy kitchen items like the cheese slice we fell for - perfect for getting thin slivers off a chunk of your favourite cheese. Oh yes you can buy the cheese here too - great offerings from the Mayo and Galway region plus the rest of Ireland. Rua dressings, chutneys and preserves are in the chill cabinet. Everyday storecupboard items like pastas, rices and pulses, plus the special things to make a meal like oils and vinegars can be picked up alongside the deli goods.  Don't forget to browse the cookbook selection - a mix of thoroughly modern and downright classic. Rightly proud are Aran and Colleen of their Mayo destination - they shout about it with a selection of local produce both in the shop and on the cafe menu upstairs. Take away coffees and teas are available in the deli along with fresh cut sandwiches and salads.  Rua makes hampers for all occasions, or you can create your own. And if you have a special party coming up, Rua can supply all the café favourites ready for you to serve at home. A fine shop - not to be missed if you are passing through Castlebar.
